A little story from Tibet dreams:
“This is about Shangri-La, the Himalayan
plateau shrouded in folklore and spiritual powers,
the roof of the world – Tibet. Tibet wasn’t
like other countries. She lived on her own, uninterested
in the affairs of others, consumed by the passion
of the Buddhist faith and culture, poor, virtuous,
self-sufficient and happy. Then the neighbours decided
to move in, said they’d come to run the shop
– and they had guns. The Chinese communists
forced Tibet’s spiritual leader, the Dalai
Lama, and his government into exile in 1959, declaring
imperiously that Tibet had always been part of China.
This of course was nonsense (incidentally, much
of China had once been part of Tibet). The Tibetans
didn’t share the same values as the Chinese,
didn’t speak their language. They asked them
to go away, prayed they would go away, asked the
world to ask them to go away, “We are busy,”
said the world. “We’ll wait,”
said Tibet. They’re still waiting, but the
world is still busy. They’re very patient,
these Tibetans. The Buddha taught them that.”
(By Joe Komodo, The Face, No 72, September 1994)
However, the wait is proving to be detrimental to
the Tibetan culture. The young Tibetans in Tibet
are influenced and consumed by the Chinese media
and culture and also by the huge influx of Han Chinese.
The Tibetans in exile are trying their best to preserve
the culture in the face of western culture. Therefore,
we at Tibet Dreams aim to preserve Tibetan culture
and its unique style. Our long term hope is that
the future generations will have the chance to experience
the Tibetan culture and way of life rather than
reading about it in a history book. We hope to achieve
this by vigorously promoting the Tibetan style in
our own clothing label (Tibet Dreams) and promoting
every thing that is part of the Tibetan culture
and its unique identity.
TIBET DREAMS offers you a TASTE OF TIBET. |
